In the past two months, CIPEG has received two new grants that will help to expand and enhance its research and educational activities.

In the first jointly funded project for CIPEG and the Center for Library & Information Innovation, Drs. John Bertot and Paul T. Jaeger – in partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago – received a $780,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to expand the concentration in e-government to create a new librarianship specialization in government information services. This grant will support 20 students to earn their degrees with a new concentration that address challenges presented by changes in the ways governments produce and make information available to the public. The project will develop an online education program combining coursework, practical experience working in the Government Information Online service, and opportunities to assist in the production of the scholarly journal Government Information Quarterly, which Dr. Bertot edits.

In addition, Drs. Yan Qu and Paul T. Jaeger have been awarded a $300,000 research grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study federal e-government transparency. This project will focus on the development of better searching, indexing, metadata, and interface approaches to make online government information that is currently difficult to find through government and commercial search engines much more readily accessible and available to users.
